DERWOOD,  MARYLAND

Derwood is one of the lesser-known gems in Montgomery County that sits between Rockville, Olney, south of Gaithersburg and North of Silver Spring. Often, the 20855 zip code is still referred to as simply "Rockville," though some prefer the more distinguished "Derwood" name. Excellent school systems, many parks, recreational centers, 4 golf courses, sports complex and various shopping centers with a country feel. Easy access to the three major airports (BWI, Dulles and DCA) in the Washington Metropolitan area with convenient access to Route 270 and 495. Country living with big city conveniences.

It includes the neighborhoods of Derwood Station (the original Derwood, located in the southwest of the area today), Mill Creek Towne, Needwood Estates, Muncaster Manor, Muncaster View, Hollybrooke, Granby Woods, Park Overlook, Redland, Candlewood Park, Cashell Estates, Avery Forest, Avery Lodge, Avery Village, Bowie Mill Estates, Bowie Mill Park, Winters Run, Redland Station, Rolling Knolls, Emory Grove, and Shady Grove Crossing.

Between 2009 and 2011, Maryland Route 200 (also known as the Inter-county Connector or ICC and runs from Route 270 to 95) was partly constructed through Derwood, with the intent of relieving congestion on the local roads. Route 200 allows a great alternative to major highways in the area taking valuable time off of you commute.

If you prefer the Metro system, the Shady Grove metro stop, the northernmost stop on the Red Line, is minutes away.

Most of the area is residential, with subdivisions built in the 1970s on up to the present day, mostly housing well-to-do families and professionals. There are some especially large and attractive homes along Muncaster Road that are not in any subdivision. New Developments are at Avery road and Muntcaster Mills, as well as Muncaster Mills and Bowie Mills. Affordable townhomes can be found at the Muncaster/Rt 115 intersection in the Shady Grove Square and Mill Creek neighborhoods. An average older home runs about $450-500K, while newer homes can easily command $800K plus. There are still some large horse farms in the area as well, as Montgomery County still has very rural areas tucked among the suburban sprawl. Derwood 20855 was one of Washingtonian's Magazine's "50 Golden Zip Codes" for the MD/DC/VA area's highest home price gains.
