Although primarily a residential community, Damascus offers a number of shopping and dining experiences for residents. Shopping is centralized around the Damascus Shopping Center and the Damascus Centre, which together offer dozens of retail options. Residents are also only a short distance away from the thousands of retailers and boutiques located throughout Montgomery County. Damascus also offers a variety of eating establishments that are popular with local residents. Red Rooster is widely known as having some of the best fried chicken in the area. For more upscale fare, Damascus is close enough that residents are still able to drive into Washington, D.C. for a world-class meal. Residents also have the option of going to anyone of the hundreds of restaurants located nearby throughout Montgomery County.


 

Arts and Culture


 

Damascus offers a number of cultural opportunities. Take a step back in time with a visit to the Damascus Heritage Society Museum. Opened in 2009, the museum reconnects visitors with Damascus's rich rural and agricultural history. Stepping back into the presents, the first thing that new residents notice about Damascus is the strong sense of community, which is showcased throughout the year at a number of events. Since 1926, the residents of Damascus put on a community fair with the support of the local fire department and numerous volunteers. The event features music, educational programs, exhibitions, craft tables for children, animals shows, and numerous other activities held over the course of three days.


 

Recreation


 

Damascus offers a variety of hiking, biking, and walking trails, along with a number of parks and recreation centers located just a short distance away. The highlight of Damascus would have to be the Damascus Recreational Park. Sitting on over 284 acres, the park has tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, baseball fields, soccer fields, horseshoe pits, and picnic areas. Damascus is also located near the Patuxent River State Park. The park is a sprawling 6,700 acres of forests and farmlands. The Park is open for fishing, hiking, and horseback riding. Hunting is also permitted in designated areas and during designated times. If you and your family are interested in camping, Little Bennett Regional Park offers the only campgrounds in all of Montgomery County, along with 3,700 acres forests, meadows, and streams. Another local favorite is the Damascus Community Recreation Center. The 31,000 square foot facility features a gymnasium, exercise room, conference room, game room, and an arts and crafts room. During the summer months Damascus residents enjoy a cooling dip in the local community pool.


 

Transportation


 

Damascus is located near Interstate 270, which connects Damascus with the neighboring communities and Washington, D.C. Those that wish to take public transportation are able to take the Montgomery County Ride-on bus to the Shady Grove Metro Station. Of course, residents can also drive to the Shady Grove Metro Station, which offers ample parking and a quick connection to the red line.
